Food is the soul of Italian culture. From a morning caffè at the bar to a long Sunday pranzo with the family, Italians take eating and drinking seriously. Learning food and drink vocabulary -- il cibo e le bevande -- will help you navigate restaurants, markets, and home cooking with confidence.
| Italian | English | Typical Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| la colazione | breakfast | 7:00 -- 9:00 | Usually light: a cappuccino and a cornetto (croissant) |
| il pranzo | lunch | 12:30 -- 14:00 | Traditionally the main meal of the day |
| la merenda | afternoon snack | 16:00 -- 17:00 | Common for children; adults might have a caffè |
| la cena | dinner / supper | 19:30 -- 21:00 | Can be lighter or heavier depending on the region |
Cultural note: Italians rarely eat breakfast in the way English speakers might expect. A typical colazione is a cappuccino (or caffè latte) with a cornetto (similar to a croissant), often standing at the bar counter. Eating a large, cooked breakfast is very unusual.
