The condizionale presente (present conditional) is the Italian equivalent of English "would." It is used for polite requests, wishes, hypothetical situations, and softened statements. For regular verbs, it is formed using the same stem as the futuro semplice but with different endings.
Use the same stem modifications as the futuro semplice:
| Verb Type | Infinitive | Future/Conditional Stem |
|---|---|---|
| -are | parlare | parler- (a → e) |
| -ere | scrivere | scriver- (drop final e) |
| -ire | dormire | dormir- (drop final e) |
| Subject | Ending |
|---|---|
| io | -ei |
| tu | -esti |
| lui / lei / Lei | -ebbe |
| noi | -emmo |
| voi | -este |
| loro | -ebbero |
Tip: Notice the double letters: lui/lei has -ebbe (double b), noi has -emmo (double m), and loro has -ebbero (double b). These double consonants are important for correct pronunciation.
