The futuro semplice (simple future) is the formal future tense in Italian. It is used in writing, formal speech, and when no time expression makes the future reference obvious. For regular verbs, it is formed by dropping the final -e of the infinitive (and changing the -a- of -are verbs to -e-) and adding the future endings.

Key point: For -ARE verbs, the a changes to e before adding endings. This is the only extra step compared to -ERE and -IRE verbs.
