The true power of the passato prossimo and imperfetto becomes clear when you use them together to tell stories. In Italian narratives — whether you are recounting your day, sharing a childhood memory, or writing fiction — the two tenses work hand-in-hand. The imperfetto paints the scene; the passato prossimo drives the action.
