Present Tense Review

This final lesson brings together everything you have learned about the Italian present tense (presente indicativo). We will review all the conjugation patterns, summarise the key irregular verbs, revisit reflexive verbs and the piacere construction, and practise avoiding common mistakes.

The Three Regular Conjugation Patterns

Key patterns to remember:

• io always ends in -o (for all regular verbs)
• noi always ends in -iamo (for all verb groups, including -isc verbs)
• -ERE and -IRE share most endings (only voi differs: -ete vs -ite)
• -ARE is the only group with the vowel a in its endings (lui/lei -a, voi -ate, loro -ano)

Reflexive Verbs Recap

Piacere Construction Recap

When to Use the Present Tense

The Italian present tense covers a wider range of meanings than the English simple present:

Use	Example	Translation
Habitual actions	Mangio pasta ogni giorno.	I eat pasta every day.
Current state	Abito a Roma.	I live in Rome.
Action in progress	Che cosa fai?	What are you doing?
General truth	L'acqua bolle a 100 gradi.	Water boils at 100 degrees.
Near future	Domani parto per Londra.	Tomorrow I leave for London.
Historical present	Nel 1492, Colombo arriva in America.	In 1492, Columbus arrives in America.

Tip: Italian does NOT have a separate progressive form like English "I am doing". The present tense Faccio means both "I do" and "I am doing". (There is a progressive form sto facendo, but the simple present is far more common.)

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Mistake 1: Using the wrong verb group ending

Wrong:  Loro scrivano (mixing -ARE ending with -ERE verb)
