Nobody wants to think about emergencies on holiday, but knowing what to say in Italian during a medical situation, theft, or accident can be the difference between a quick resolution and a prolonged ordeal. In this lesson you will learn essential emergency vocabulary, how to get medical help, and how to deal with the police.

Tip: 112 is the universal emergency number throughout the EU. If you remember only one number, remember 112. Operators speak Italian but English-speaking operators are available.

Italian pharmacies are excellent and pharmacists (farmacisti) can recommend treatments for minor ailments without needing to see a doctor. They are identified by a large green cross sign.
