In English, adjectives almost always come before the noun: "the red car," "a beautiful house," "an interesting book." In Spanish, the default position for adjectives is after the noun. However, some adjectives regularly appear before the noun, and in certain cases, the placement changes the meaning entirely.
Most descriptive adjectives in Spanish come after the noun they modify:
| Spanish | English |
|---|---|
| un coche rojo | a red car |
| una casa grande | a big house |
| un libro interesante | an interesting book |
| una mujer inteligente | an intelligent woman |
| una ciudad bonita | a pretty city |
| un examen difícil | a difficult exam |
| agua fría | cold water |
| un día largo | a long day |
Key principle: When an adjective distinguishes the noun from others of its kind (which car? the red one), it goes after the noun. Since most adjectives serve this distinguishing function, the default position is after.
Some adjectives frequently or always appear before the noun. These tend to express subjective judgements, inherent qualities, or quantity rather than distinguishing characteristics:
| Adjective | English | Example |
|---|---|---|
| bueno/a | good | un buen libro (a good book) |
| malo/a | bad | una mala idea (a bad idea) |
| gran(de) | great | un gran hombre (a great man) |
| primer(o) | first | el primer día (the first day) |
| último/a | last | la última vez (the last time) |
| nuevo/a | new | un nuevo comienzo (a new beginning) |
| viejo/a | old | un viejo amigo (an old friend) |
| joven | young | un joven estudiante (a young student) |
| bello/a | beautiful | una bella canción (a beautiful song) |
| pequeño/a | small, little | un pequeño problema (a small problem) |
Tip: Adjectives of quantity and order (mucho, poco, otro, cada, primer, último, etc.) almost always go before the noun.
Several adjectives lose their final syllable when placed before a masculine singular noun. This shortening is called apocopation.
