Being able to share your thoughts, agree with others, and politely disagree is a cornerstone of meaningful conversation. In this lesson, you will learn the key phrases for expressing opinions in Spanish, along with strategies for agreeing and disagreeing respectfully.
Spanish offers a rich set of phrases for introducing your point of view. The choice depends on how strongly you want to state your opinion:
| Spanish | English | Strength |
|---|---|---|
| Creo que... | I think that... | Moderate |
| Pienso que... | I think that... | Moderate |
| Me parece que... | It seems to me that... | Softer |
| En mi opinión... | In my opinion... | Moderate-Strong |
| Para mí... | For me... / In my view... | Moderate |
| Desde mi punto de vista... | From my point of view... | Formal / Strong |
| Considero que... | I consider that... | Formal |
| Opino que... | I'm of the opinion that... | Formal |
| Yo diría que... | I would say that... | Softer / Tentative |
| A mi modo de ver... | The way I see it... | Formal |
| A mi parecer... | In my view... | Formal |
Tip: In everyday conversation, creo que and me parece que are by far the most commonly used. Save the formal expressions for written essays, presentations, or professional contexts.
When someone says something you agree with, here are ways to express that:
| Spanish | English |
|---|---|
| Estoy totalmente de acuerdo | I totally agree |
| Tienes toda la razón | You're absolutely right |
| ¡Exacto! / ¡Exactamente! | Exactly! |
| ¡Por supuesto! | Of course! |
| Sin duda | Without a doubt |
| Eso es | That's right |
| ¡Desde luego! | Of course! / Indeed! |
| Spanish | English |
|---|---|
| Estoy de acuerdo | I agree |
| Tienes razón | You're right |
| Es verdad | It's true |
| Sí, eso creo yo también | Yes, I think so too |
| Opino lo mismo | I think the same |
| Coincido contigo | I agree with you |
| Spanish | English |
|---|---|
| Sí, en parte tienes razón | Yes, you're partly right |
| Hasta cierto punto, sí | To a certain extent, yes |
| En eso estoy de acuerdo, pero... | I agree on that, but... |
| Puede ser | Could be |
| Es posible | It's possible |
Disagreeing in Spanish requires tact. Direct contradiction can come across as rude, so softening your language is important:
| Spanish | English |
|---|---|
| No estoy de acuerdo | I don't agree |
| No creo que sea así | I don't think that's the case |
| Respeto tu opinión, pero... | I respect your opinion, but... |
| Entiendo lo que dices, pero... | I understand what you're saying, but... |
| No lo veo así | I don't see it that way |
| No estoy tan seguro/a | I'm not so sure |
| Yo lo veo de otra manera | I see it differently |
