Now that you know how to form the future tense (both regular and irregular), it is time to put it to use in real-life contexts. In this lesson, we explore how Spanish uses the future tense for plans, predictions, promises, and conjectures (the "future of probability").
When talking about planned future actions, both ir + a + infinitive and the simple future can be used:
| Context | Example | English |
|---|---|---|
| Spoken, informal | Voy a viajar a Italia. | I'm going to travel to Italy. |
| Written, formal | Viajaré a Italia en junio. | I will travel to Italy in June. |
| Announcement | La conferencia comenzará a las nueve. | The conference will begin at nine. |
| Personal plan | Este verano estudiaré francés. | This summer I will study French. |
Ana: ¿Qué harás este fin de semana? Luis: El sábado iré al cine con mi hermana. Y el domingo estudiaré para el examen. Ana: ¿Qué película veréis? Luis: No lo sé todavía. Ya veremos cuando lleguemos.
Translation:
Ana: What will you do this weekend? Luis: On Saturday I'll go to the cinema with my sister. And on Sunday I'll study for the exam. Ana: What film will you see? Luis: I don't know yet. We'll see when we get there.
The future tense is commonly used to make predictions about what will happen:
| Expression | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Creo que... | I think that... | Creo que lloverá. |
| Estoy seguro/a de que... | I'm sure that... | Estoy segura de que vendrá. |
| Probablemente... | Probably... | Probablemente llegarán tarde. |
| Seguramente... | Surely... | Seguramente hará frío. |
| Supongo que... | I suppose that... | Supongo que dirá la verdad. |
| Imagino que... | I imagine that... | Imagino que querrán cenar fuera. |
| Es probable que... | It's likely that... | Es probable que nieve. |
The future tense is the natural choice for making promises in Spanish:
Madre: ¿Limpiarás tu habitación antes de salir? Carlos: Sí, mamá, la limpiaré. Lo prometo. Madre: ¿Y harás la tarea? Carlos: También la haré. No te preocupes.
Translation:
Mother: Will you clean your room before going out? Carlos: Yes, Mum, I will clean it. I promise. Mother: And will you do your homework? Carlos: I will do it too. Don't worry.
