Using the Future for Plans

When talking about planned future actions, both ir + a + infinitive and the simple future can be used:

Announcement	La conferencia comenzará a las nueve.	The conference will begin at nine.

Translation:

Using the Future for Predictions

The future tense is commonly used to make predictions about what will happen:

Weather Predictions

• Mañana hará mucho calor. — Tomorrow it will be very hot.
• Este invierno nevará mucho. — This winter it will snow a lot.
• Lloverá toda la semana. — It will rain all week.
• El fin de semana hará buen tiempo. — The weekend will have good weather.

General Predictions

• Creo que España ganará el Mundial. — I think Spain will win the World Cup.
• La economía mejorará el próximo año. — The economy will improve next year.
• Estoy seguro de que aprobarás el examen. — I'm sure you will pass the exam.
• La tecnología cambiará nuestras vidas. — Technology will change our lives.

Using the Future for Promises

The future tense is the natural choice for making promises in Spanish:

• Te llamaré mañana sin falta. — I will call you tomorrow without fail.
• Terminaré el informe antes del viernes. — I will finish the report before Friday.
• Cuidaré bien de tu gato, no te preocupes. — I will take good care of your cat, don't worry.
• Te lo devolveré la semana que viene. — I will return it to you next week.
• Nunca te mentiré. — I will never lie to you.

Madre: ¿Limpiarás tu habitación antes de salir? Carlos: Sí, mamá, la limpiaré. Lo prometo. Madre: ¿Y harás la tarea? Carlos: También la haré. No te preocupes.

Translation:

Mother: Will you clean your room before going out? Carlos: Yes, Mum, I will clean it. I promise. Mother: And will you do your homework? Carlos: I will do it too. Don't worry.
