Subjunctive with Emotions

When we express emotions about other people's actions or situations, we use the subjunctive. This is the "E" in the WEIRDO acronym. The logic is the same as with wishes: the speaker is not stating a fact but reacting emotionally to it.

Why Emotions Trigger the Subjunctive

Consider these two sentences:

1. Juan está aquí. — Juan is here. (indicative — stating a fact)
2. Me alegra que Juan esté aquí. — I'm glad that Juan is here. (subjunctive — emotional reaction)

In sentence 2, the important thing is not the fact itself but how the speaker feels about it. The subjunctive marks this emotional framing.

Key principle: When the main clause expresses an emotion and the subordinate clause has a different subject, the subordinate clause uses the subjunctive.
