When we express emotions about other people's actions or situations, we use the subjunctive. This is the "E" in the WEIRDO acronym. The logic is the same as with wishes: the speaker is not stating a fact but reacting emotionally to it.
Consider these two sentences:
In sentence 2, the important thing is not the fact itself but how the speaker feels about it. The subjunctive marks this emotional framing.
Key principle: When the main clause expresses an emotion and the subordinate clause has a different subject, the subordinate clause uses the subjunctive.
