Navigating an airport in a Spanish-speaking country can feel daunting, but with the right vocabulary and phrases you will breeze through check-in, security, and boarding. This lesson covers everything you need from the moment you arrive at the terminal to the moment you board your flight.

Mi vuelo sale a las tres de la tarde. My flight leaves at three in the afternoon.
¿Dónde puedo recoger mi equipaje? Where can I pick up my luggage?
¿Hay algún retraso en el vuelo? Is there any delay on the flight?
¿Cuál es la puerta de embarque para el vuelo a Madrid? Which is the boarding gate for the flight to Madrid?

At the check-in counter

Spanish English
Quisiera facturar mi equipaje. I would like to check in my luggage.
Tengo una maleta y un equipaje de mano. I have one suitcase and one carry-on.
¿Puedo elegir mi asiento? Can I choose my seat?
Prefiero un asiento de ventanilla. I prefer a window seat.
Prefiero un asiento de pasillo. I prefer an aisle seat.
Aquí tiene mi pasaporte y mi reserva. Here is my passport and my booking.
¿A qué hora empieza el embarque? What time does boarding begin?

Tip: In Latin America you will often hear boleto instead of billete for "ticket", and equipaje de mano is universally understood for "carry-on luggage."

Dialogue: At the Check-In Counter

Agente: Buenos días. ¿Puedo ver su pasaporte y su reserva, por favor?

Viajero: Sí, claro. Aquí tiene.

Agente: Gracias. ¿Va a facturar equipaje?

Viajero: Sí, tengo una maleta grande y un equipaje de mano.

Agente: Muy bien. Ponga la maleta en la cinta, por favor. ¿Tiene preferencia de asiento?

Viajero: Sí, prefiero un asiento de ventanilla, si es posible.

Agente: Perfecto. Le he asignado el asiento 14A. La puerta de embarque es la B12 y el embarque comienza a las dos y cuarto.

Viajero: ¿A qué hora sale el vuelo exactamente?

Agente: Sale a las tres menos diez. Aquí tiene su tarjeta de embarque. ¡Buen viaje!

Going Through Security

When going through airport security, you may hear or need these phrases:

  • Por favor, saque los líquidos y los aparatos electrónicos de su bolsa. — Please take out the liquids and electronic devices from your bag.
  • Quítese el cinturón y los zapatos. — Take off your belt and shoes.
  • Pase por el arco de seguridad. — Walk through the security scanner.
  • ¿Lleva algo metálico? — Are you carrying anything metallic?
  • Abra su maleta, por favor. — Open your suitcase, please.

At Customs (La Aduana)

Spanish English
¿Tiene algo que declarar? Do you have anything to declare?
No tengo nada que declarar. I have nothing to declare.
¿Cuál es el motivo de su viaje? What is the purpose of your trip?
Estoy de vacaciones. I am on holiday.
Estoy aquí por negocios. I am here on business.
Me quedo una semana. I am staying for one week.
Me alojo en un hotel. I am staying at a hotel.

Announcements You Might Hear

Here are common airport announcements in Spanish:

  • "Última llamada para el vuelo IB3456 con destino a Buenos Aires. Diríjanse a la puerta C7." — Last call for flight IB3456 to Buenos Aires. Please proceed to gate C7.
  • "El vuelo AV920 con destino a Bogotá tiene un retraso de cuarenta y cinco minutos." — Flight AV920 to Bogota is delayed by forty-five minutes.
  • "Se ruega a los pasajeros que mantengan su equipaje vigilado en todo momento." — Passengers are asked to keep their luggage attended at all times.

Quick Grammar: Preguntas con "¿Dónde...?"

To ask "Where is...?" in Spanish, use ¿Dónde está...? for a specific place:

  • ¿Dónde está la puerta B12? — Where is gate B12?
  • ¿Dónde está la sala VIP? — Where is the VIP lounge?
  • ¿Dónde están los baños? — Where are the toilets?

Notice that está changes to están when the noun is plural.
