Reading Strategy

When you encounter Thai text, follow this systematic approach:

1. Identify syllable boundaries (look for consonant clusters and vowel patterns)
2. For each syllable: a. Find the initial consonant → determine its class b. Identify the vowel and its length (short / long) c. Check for tone marks d. Identify the final consonant (if any) e. Determine live / dead f. Apply tone rules
3. Combine syllables into words
4. Use context to determine word boundaries (no spaces!)

Practice 1: Simple Words

Read each word, then check your pronunciation:

• Dead syllable (ends in stop บ), long vowel, high class
• → High class + dead + long = low tone
• = khɔ̀ɔp

คุณ = ค (low) + -ุ (short) + น (final)

• Live syllable (ends in sonorant น), low class, no mark
• → Low class + live + no mark = mid tone
• = khun

ครับ = ค (low) + ร + -ั (short) + บ (final)

• Dead syllable (ends in stop บ), short vowel, low class
• → Low class + dead + short = high tone
• = khráp

Full phrase: khɔ̀ɔp-khun khráp = "Thank you" (male speaker)
