This lesson covers three letters that share a distinctive base shape — a deep curve resembling a bowl or cup: Jiim (ج), Haa (ح), and Khaa (خ). These letters are distinguished from each other entirely by their dots.
All three letters in this group share the same basic form — a rounded, open shape that looks like a bowl. The dot (or absence of a dot) tells you which letter you are reading:
| Letter | Dots | Position |
|---|---|---|
| ج (Jiim) | 1 | Below (inside the bowl) |
| ح (Haa) | 0 | No dot |
| خ (Khaa) | 1 | Above |
| Form | Shape | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Isolated | ج | Full bowl with 1 dot inside/below |
| Initial | جـ | Open curve connecting left, 1 dot below |
| Medial | ـجـ | Connecting both sides, 1 dot below |
| Final | ـج | Full bowl connecting from right, 1 dot below |
| Arabic | Transliteration | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| جَمال | jamaal | beauty / camel |
| جَديد | jadiid | new |
| مَسجِد | masjid | mosque |
Haa is the dotless version of this base shape. It produces a sound that does not exist in English.
| Form | Shape | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Isolated | ح | Full bowl, no dot |
| Initial | حـ | Open curve connecting left, no dot |
| Medial | ـحـ | Connecting both sides, no dot |
| Final | ـح | Full bowl connecting from right, no dot |
Tip: Place your hand on your throat and try to say "h" while constricting the muscles at the very back. That deep, breathy sound is ح.
| Arabic | Transliteration | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| حَبيب | habiib | beloved |
| حَليب | haliib | milk |
| صَباح | sabaah | morning |
Khaa has the same base shape with one dot above.
