This lesson covers four letters: Taa (ط), Zhaa (ظ), Ayn (ع), and Ghayn (غ). This is often considered the most challenging group because it contains two more emphatic consonants and two sounds — Ayn and Ghayn — that have no equivalent in English.
These two letters share a tall, looped base shape and are both emphatic consonants.
Note: This is a different letter from ت (Taa) learned in Lesson 2. To distinguish them, ط is sometimes called "Taa with a loop" or referred to by its emphatic quality.
| Form | Shape | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Isolated | ط | Tall vertical with a loop at the base, no dot |
| Initial | طـ | Loop shape connecting left |
| Medial | ـطـ | Loop connecting both sides |
| Final | ـط | Loop connecting from right |
| Arabic | Transliteration | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| طَبيب | tabiib | doctor |
| طَعام | taʿaam | food |
| خَط | khatt | line / handwriting |
Zhaa is Taa (ط) with one dot above.
| Form | Shape | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Isolated | ظ | Tall loop with 1 dot above |
| Initial | ظـ | Loop connecting left, 1 dot above |
| Medial | ـظـ | Loop connecting both sides, 1 dot above |
| Final | ـظ | Loop connecting from right, 1 dot above |
| Arabic | Transliteration | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ظَلام | zhulaam | darkness |
| حَظّ | hazz | luck |
| نَظَر | nazhar | sight / looking |
With ط and ظ, we now have all four emphatic consonants:
| Regular | Sound | Emphatic | Sound | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ت (Taa) | light "t" | ط (Taa) | heavy "t" | Tongue position |
| د (Daal) | light "d" | ض (Daad) | heavy "d" | Tongue position |
| س (Siin) | light "s" | ص (Saad) | heavy "s" | Tongue position |
| ذ (Dhaal) | light "th" | ظ (Zhaa) | heavy "th" | Tongue position |
Tip: The key to emphatic consonants is tongue retraction — pulling the root of the tongue back toward the pharynx. This creates a characteristic "dark" or "thick" sound quality.
These two letters share a distinctive base shape that resembles a small "c" or hook. They produce sounds that are among the hardest for English speakers to learn.
| Form | Shape | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Isolated | ع | Open hook/eye shape, no dot |
| Initial | عـ | Small c-shape connecting left |
| Medial | ـعـ | Connecting both sides, rounded |
| Final | ـع | Hook connecting from right |
