Greek letters are the universal language of mathematics, physics, statistics, engineering, and computer science. Even people who have never studied Greek encounter these letters daily. This lesson provides a comprehensive guide to how each Greek letter is used in scientific notation.
When European scholars rediscovered ancient Greek mathematical and philosophical texts during the Renaissance, they adopted Greek letters as symbols. Over time, this became a universal convention:
| Letter | Name | Primary Uses |
|---|---|---|
| α (alpha) | Alpha | Angles, significance level (statistics), alpha particles, fine-structure constant |
| β (beta) | Beta | Angles, beta decay, beta coefficient (finance), beta function |
| γ (gamma) | Gamma | Euler-Mascheroni constant, gamma rays, Lorentz factor, surface tension |
| δ (delta) | Delta | Small change/variation, Kronecker delta δᵢⱼ, Dirac delta function |
| ε (epsilon) | Epsilon | Arbitrarily small quantity ("for all ε > 0"), permittivity, strain |
| ζ (zeta) | Zeta | Riemann zeta function ζ(s), damping ratio |
| η (eta) | Eta | Efficiency, viscosity (fluid mechanics), Dedekind eta function |
| θ (theta) | Theta | Angles (especially in trigonometry and polar coordinates), Jacobi theta function |
