Greek was the first alphabet in history to represent vowels as full, independent letters. Understanding the seven vowel letters is your first step toward reading Greek fluently.
Modern Greek has five distinct vowel sounds but seven vowel letters. Some letters that were pronounced differently in Ancient Greek have merged to the same sound in Modern Greek.
| Letter | Name | Uppercase | Lowercase | Modern Sound | Ancient Sound |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Α α | Alpha | Α | α | "a" as in "father" | "a" as in "father" |
| Ε ε | Epsilon | Ε | ε | "e" as in "bed" | "e" as in "bed" |
| Η η | Eta | Η | η | "ee" as in "see" | "ay" as in "day" |
| Ι ι | Iota | Ι | ι | "ee" as in "see" | "ee" as in "see" |
| Ο ο | Omicron | Ο | ο | "o" as in "got" | short "o" |
| Υ υ | Upsilon | Υ | υ | "ee" as in "see" | "oo" as in "food" (or French "u") |
| Ω ω | Omega | Ω | ω | "o" as in "got" | long "o" as in "go" |
Tip: In Modern Greek, η, ι, and υ all sound like "ee". This is called iotacism — a major sound shift that occurred over centuries.
One of the most notable features of Modern Greek is that three letters and several digraphs all produce the same "ee" sound:
| Spelling | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| η | μήνας (meenas) | month |
| ι | πίτα (peeta) | pie/pita |
| υ | μύθος (meethos) | myth |
| ει | είναι (eeneh) | is/are |
| οι | οίκος (eekos) | house |
This means spelling in Greek requires memorisation — you cannot always tell from the sound alone which "ee" spelling to use.
Similarly, Omicron (ο) and Omega (ω) produce the same sound in Modern Greek:
| Letter | Name | Meaning of Name |
|---|---|---|
| Ο ο | Omicron | "small o" (ο μικρόν) |
| Ω ω | Omega | "big o" (ω μέγα) |
In Ancient Greek, Omicron was a short "o" and Omega was a long "o". Today the distinction is only in spelling.
Modern pronunciation:
ο in πόλη (polee — "city") sounds the same as
ω in ώρα (ora — "hour")
Let us look at how to form each lowercase vowel:
