Five Hebrew letters have a special form used when the letter appears at the end of a word. These are called sofit (סוֹפִית — "final") forms. This lesson covers all five in detail, with practice examples and tips for recognition.
In ancient times, Hebrew was often written without spaces between words. Final forms helped readers identify where one word ended and the next began. Today, Hebrew uses spaces, but the tradition of final forms has been preserved.
| Letter | Name | Standard Form | Final Form (Sofit) | Sound |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kaf | כַּף / כָּף | כ | ך | k / kh |
| Mem | מֵם | מ | ם | m |
| Nun | נוּן | נ | ן | n |
| Pe | פֵּא | פ | ף | p / f |
| Tsadi | צָדִי | צ | ץ | ts |
Memory aid: You can remember the five sofit letters with the mnemonic כמנפצ (read "kamnepats") — or in English order: K-M-N-P-Ts.
