Congratulations on reaching the final lesson! You have learned all 22 Hebrew letters, the five final forms, the nikkud vowel system, the dagesh and special marks, and essential vocabulary. Now it is time to practise reading connected text and plan your next steps.
When approaching a Hebrew word or sentence, follow these steps:
Try reading these simple sentences (with nikkud for guidance):
שָׁלוֹם! מָה שְׁלוֹמְךָ?
shalom! ma shlomkha?
Hello! How are you? (to a male)
אֲנִי לוֹמֵד עִבְרִית.
ani lomed ivrit.
I am learning Hebrew. (male speaker)
הַיֶּלֶד קוֹרֵא סֵפֶר.
hayeled kore sefer.
The boy reads a book.
בֹּקֶר טוֹב! הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ זוֹרַחַת.
boker tov! hashemesh zorachat.
Good morning! The sun is shining.
אֲנַחְנוּ גָּרִים בִּירוּשָׁלַיִם.
anachnu garim birushalayim.
We live in Jerusalem.
Hebrew uses predictable patterns (mishkalim) to build words from roots. Recognising these patterns accelerates your reading:
| Pattern | Structure | Meaning Type | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| CaCaC | 1a2a3 | Past tense (he did) | כָּתַב (katav — he wrote) |
| CoCeC | 1o2e3 | Present tense (he does) | כּוֹתֵב (kotev — he writes) |
| miCCaC | mi12a3 | Place | מִכְתָּב (mikhtav — letter) |
| CaCCan | 1a23an | Professional | זַמָּר (zamar — singer) |
| taCCiC | ta12i3 | Noun | תַּלְמִיד (talmid — student) |
Tip: As you encounter new words, try to match them to these patterns and identify the root.
In everyday Israeli life, Hebrew is written without nikkud. Here are strategies for reading unpointed text:
| Strategy | Description |
|---|---|
| Context | Use surrounding words to guess meaning |
| Root recognition | Identify the 3-letter root |
| Pattern matching | Recognise word-building patterns |
| Matres lectionis | Look for vowel letters: ו (o/u), י (i/e), ה (a at end) |
| Frequency | Common words become recognisable by shape |
Matres lectionis are consonant letters used as vowel indicators in unpointed text:
| Letter | Vowel Role | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ו | o or u | שלום = שָׁלוֹם (shalom) |
| י | i or e | שיר = שִׁיר (shir — song) |
| ה (at end) | a | ילדה = יַלְדָּה (yalda — girl) |
| א (at end) | a | הוא = הוּא (hu — he) |
Hebrew has its own calendar used for religious dates:
