The Hard Sign: Ъ

The hard sign (твёрдый знак, tvyordyy znak) is the rarest letter in the Russian alphabet. Like the soft sign, it makes no sound of its own. Instead, it acts as a separator.

What Does Ъ Do?

Ъ prevents the consonant before it from merging with the vowel after it. It creates a clear break — a tiny pause or "y" glide.

Where Ъ Appears

Ъ almost exclusively appears after prefixes that end in a consonant, before the vowels Е, Ё, Ю, Я:

Tip: Think of Ъ as a "hard wall" between the prefix and the root. It says: "Stop! Do not blend these together."

The Short И: Й

Й (и краткое, "short i") is officially classified as a consonant in Russian, even though it is based on the vowel И. It makes a "y" sound (as in "boy" or "yes") and typically appears:

1. At the end of words after a vowel
2. Occasionally at the beginning of loanwords
