The final step in LNAT Section A preparation is simulating real test conditions as closely as possible. Candidates who have only practised in comfortable, low-stakes environments often find that their performance drops significantly on test day — not because the questions are harder, but because the environment is unfamiliar and stressful. This lesson explains how to create realistic simulations and how to prepare for the specific conditions of the Pearson VUE test centre.
Research on learning and performance consistently shows a "transfer gap" — skills practised in one environment do not fully transfer to a different environment. If you have only ever practised LNAT questions at your desk, with music playing, taking breaks whenever you want, your performance under formal test conditions will be lower.
The factors that cause this gap include:
| Factor | Practice Environment | Test Environment |
|---|---|---|
| Noise | Quiet home or library | Ambient noise from other candidates typing, coughing, shifting |
| Comfort | Your own chair, desk, screen | An unfamiliar workstation |
| Breaks | Take breaks whenever you want | No breaks during Section A |
| Stakes | Low — it is just practice | High — your university offers depend on this |
| Timing | Often self-managed loosely | Strict countdown timer on screen |
| Technology | Your own computer | Pearson VUE terminal (different screen, keyboard, interface) |
The more closely you can replicate the test environment in your practice, the smaller the transfer gap.
The LNAT is delivered at Pearson VUE test centres across the UK and internationally. Here is what you will encounter:
You cannot perfectly replicate a Pearson VUE centre at home, but you can get close:
| Element | How to Simulate |
|---|---|
| Timing | Use a countdown timer set to 95 minutes for Section A |
| Screen | Use a computer, not paper. Match the screen size to a standard desktop monitor if possible |
| No aids | Put away your phone, close all other browser tabs, remove any notes |
| Scratch paper only | Use a single sheet of A4 paper and a pen — nothing else |
| No breaks | Do not pause the timer for any reason. No getting up, no phone checks, no drink breaks (unless you are simulating having water at the desk) |
| Ambient noise | Play a recording of "office ambience" or "exam hall noise" at low volume to simulate background sound |
| Start to finish | Complete the entire Section A (12 passages) in one sitting. Do not split it across sessions |
| Followed by Section B | Immediately after Section A, start Section B (40 minutes for the essay). This simulates the full test length |
Here is a complete protocol for a realistic mock test:
