This is your final lesson — and it brings together everything you have learned into a set of practical strategies specifically designed for the SET Stage 1 English paper. Think of this lesson as your exam-day toolkit.
Let us start with a clear picture of what you are preparing for:
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Time | 45 minutes |
| Format | Multiple choice |
| Content | Comprehension passages (fiction, non-fiction, and possibly poetry) |
| Question types | Retrieval, inference, vocabulary, writer's craft, purpose, tone |
| Number of passages | Typically 2-3 passages |
| No VR or NVR | The SET does not test Verbal or Non-Verbal Reasoning |
Key point: Because there is no VR or NVR, the English paper carries significant weight. A strong performance in comprehension can make a real difference to your overall score.
For each passage in the SET exam, use the two-read approach:
| Read | Purpose | Time |
|---|---|---|
| First read | Skim quickly to understand the topic, main characters, and overall mood | 1-2 minutes |
| Second read | Targeted, careful reading to find answers to specific questions | As needed for each question |
Before you search for the answer, make sure you understand the question. Here is how to decode common SET question types:
| Question wording | What it is really asking | Skill needed |
|---|---|---|
| "According to the passage..." | Find information directly stated in the text | Retrieval |
| "What does the word '______' suggest?" | What does this word mean or imply here? | Vocabulary / inference |
| "How does the writer create a sense of...?" | What techniques or language choices create this effect? | Writer's craft |
| "What is the main purpose of this passage?" | Why was this written? | Purpose |
| "Which statement best describes...?" | Choose the most accurate summary | Comprehension / inference |
| "What can you infer about...?" | What is suggested but not stated directly? | Inference |
Elimination is your most powerful tool in a multiple-choice exam:
| If you can eliminate... | Your chance of getting it right goes from... |
|---|---|
| 0 options | 25% (random guess) |
| 1 option | 33% |
| 2 options | 50% |
| 3 options | 100% (you have found the answer) |
Even eliminating one wrong answer significantly improves your odds.
With 45 minutes for the whole paper, every minute counts. Here is a suggested time plan:
| Activity | Suggested time |
|---|---|
| Read and skim all passages | 5-8 minutes |
| Answer questions | 30-35 minutes |
| Check and review | 3-5 minutes |
