Multiplication and division appear throughout the SET 11+ maths papers. You need to be fluent with times tables up to 12 × 12, comfortable with long multiplication and short/long division, and confident with related concepts such as remainders and divisibility rules. This lesson covers everything you need.
Knowing your times tables by heart is essential. If you hesitate on a times-table fact, it slows you down on every question that uses multiplication or division.
You should know all facts from 1 × 1 to 12 × 12 instantly.
Here are some commonly tested facts:
| Fact | Answer | Fact | Answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 × 8 | 56 | 9 × 7 | 63 |
| 6 × 7 | 42 | 8 × 9 | 72 |
| 12 × 8 | 96 | 11 × 12 | 132 |
Top Tip: If you struggle with a particular table (many children find 7s and 8s hardest), practise it every day until it becomes automatic.
Short multiplication means multiplying by a single-digit number.
Calculate 473 × 6.
