Time and measurement questions appear regularly on the SET 11+ maths papers. You need to convert between units, read timetables, calculate time intervals, and work with metric and imperial measures. On Stage 2, clear working is essential, especially when converting units. This lesson covers all the skills you need.
| 12-hour | 24-hour |
|---|---|
| 12:00 am (midnight) | 00:00 |
| 7:30 am | 07:30 |
| 12:00 pm (noon) | 12:00 |
| 3:45 pm | 15:45 |
| 9:15 pm | 21:15 |
| 11:59 pm | 23:59 |
To convert pm times to 24-hour: add 12 to the hour.
To convert 24-hour times after 12:00 to pm: subtract 12 from the hour.
Count from the start time to the end time in stages.
A bus departs at 09:47 and arrives at 11:23. How long is the journey?
A film starts at 15:25 and lasts 1 hour 50 minutes. What time does it end?
SET Tip: Be careful when adding minutes that go past the hour. 16:25 + 50 minutes = 16:75 is wrong — you need to convert: 75 minutes = 1 hour 15 minutes, so 16:25 + 50 = 17:15.
A bus arrives at 14:10. The journey took 1 hour 35 minutes. What time did it depart?
On the SET, you may be given a bus or train timetable and asked to find journey times or the best connection.
