The SET 11+ exam takes place over two separate days — Stage 1 first, and Stage 2 several weeks later (if you are invited). This lesson covers how to prepare for both exam days so you arrive feeling confident and ready.
Before Exam Day
The Week Before
Do light revision only. If you have been practising for months, the week before is not the time to learn new topics. Review your notes and do one final timed paper, then rest.
Check the details. Know the date, time, and location. The SET is usually held at one of the Sutton grammar schools. Check which school your child is assigned to.
Prepare your equipment. Pack the night before:
Black pen (plus a spare)
Pencil and eraser
Ruler
Water bottle (clear, no label)
Admission letter or confirmation
The Night Before
Have a normal evening — no last-minute cramming
Lay out clothes and equipment
Set an alarm with plenty of time to spare
Aim for 9-10 hours of sleep
Avoid screens for at least 30 minutes before bed
On the Morning
Eat a proper breakfast: porridge, toast, eggs, or cereal — something sustaining, not sugary
Arrive at the venue at least 20 minutes early
Visit the toilet before the exam starts
Take a few slow, deep breaths if you feel nervous
Remember: nerves are normal and can actually help you focus
During Stage 1
Stage 1 consists of two MCQ papers (English and Maths), usually with a short break between them.
Key reminders:
Read each question and ALL the options before selecting your answer
If you are stuck, eliminate wrong answers and make your best guess
Do not leave any questions blank — there is no penalty for guessing
Watch the clock: aim to be halfway through by the halfway point
If you finish early, go back and check your answers
Between the two papers:
Have a drink of water
Take a few deep breaths
Do NOT discuss the first paper with friends — this can increase anxiety
Focus on the next paper, not the one you have just finished
Waiting for Stage 2
