This final lesson in the Decision Making course focuses on how to structure your practice, identify and fix recurring errors, and develop a systematic approach that maximises your DM score on test day. Effective preparation is not about doing more questions — it is about doing questions more effectively.
In this phase, focus on understanding each question type without time pressure:
| Question Type | Key Technique to Master |
|---|---|
| Logical puzzles | Grid/table setup, constraint elimination |
| Syllogisms | Venn diagram method, quantifier recognition |
| Data interpretation | Accurate reading, trend identification |
| Probabilistic reasoning | Converting to concrete numbers, 2×2 tables |
| Venn diagrams | Start from centre, verify totals |
| Assumptions | The negative test |
| Arguments | Evidence vs emotion, logical flaw recognition |
| Yes/No items | Independent evaluation, partial credit strategy |
Target: Be able to solve each question type accurately (not necessarily quickly).
In this phase, add time pressure gradually:
Target: Maintain 80%+ accuracy while solving within 65 seconds per question.
Complete full DM sections (29 questions in 31 minutes) under exam conditions:
Target: Achieve your target score consistently across multiple practice tests.
Simply doing more practice questions without analysing your errors is one of the most common and costly mistakes in UCAT preparation. Every wrong answer contains information about how to improve.
After every practice session, review each wrong answer using this framework:
| Category | Question to Ask | What It Tells You |
|---|---|---|
| Misread | Did I misread the question or data? | Need to slow down reading phase |
| Technique | Did I know the right technique? | Need to review lesson content |
| Application | Did I know the technique but apply it incorrectly? | Need more targeted practice |
| Careless | Did I make a silly mistake I could have caught? | Need to add a verification step |
| Time | Did I run out of time and guess? | Need to improve speed or flagging strategy |
| Trap | Did I fall for a known trap (reversed conditional, quantifier shift, etc.)? | Need to build awareness of specific traps |
Create a simple spreadsheet with these columns:
| Question # | Type | Error Category | What Went Wrong | How to Prevent |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 14 | Syllogism | Technique | Forgot that "some" is compatible with "all" | Review quantifier rules |
| 22 | Venn | Careless | Added wrong — total was 105, should be 100 | Always verify total |
| 7 | Assumption | Trap | Chose a true statement that was not an assumption | Apply negative test to every option |
After 3-5 practice sessions, look for patterns:
Having a consistent procedure for each question type reduces cognitive load and prevents errors. Here is a recommended system:
