Data interpretation questions appear in approximately 3–5 of the 29 DM questions. They present data in tables, bar charts, pie charts, or line graphs and ask you to draw logical conclusions. The challenge is not usually the mathematics — it is reading the data accurately and identifying exactly which numbers are relevant to the question.
Before looking at any question, spend the first 10 seconds on:
UCAT Tip: The majority of errors in data interpretation come from misreading the structure, not from incorrect calculations. Investing 10 seconds upfront saves far more time than correcting errors later.
Format 1: Simple frequency table
| Ward | Patients admitted | Average stay (days) |
|---|---|---|
| Cardiology | 120 | 4.5 |
| Neurology | 85 | 6.2 |
| Oncology | 95 | 8.1 |
Format 2: Cross-tabulation (two-way table)
| Male | Female | Total | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Treatment A | 30 | 45 | 75 |
| Treatment B | 50 | 25 | 75 |
| Total | 80 | 70 | 150 |
Format 3: Time series
| Year | Applications | Offers | Acceptances |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2022 | 500 | 200 | 150 |
| 2023 | 550 | 210 | 160 |
| 2024 | 480 | 190 | 145 |
For each question, identify:
Using the cross-tabulation above: What proportion of patients receiving Treatment A are female?
Step 1: The relevant row is Treatment A. The relevant columns are Female and Total.
Step 2: Female patients on Treatment A = 45. Total on Treatment A = 75.
Step 3: Proportion = 45/75 = 3/5 = 0.6 or 60%.
Common Error: Using the column total (Female = 70) instead of the row total (Treatment A = 75). The question asks about patients receiving Treatment A, so the denominator is 75.
| Chart type | How to read |
|---|---|
| Simple bar chart | Read the height of each bar against the y-axis |
| Grouped bar chart | Compare bars within each group and across groups |
| Stacked bar chart | Read the top of each segment, and subtract to find the value of each segment |
| Horizontal bar chart | Same as vertical but read against the x-axis |
A grouped bar chart shows the number of GP appointments in three clinics across two years (2023 and 2024). Clinic A had 450 appointments in 2023 and 500 in 2024.
Question: What is the percentage increase in appointments at Clinic A from 2023 to 2024?
Percentage increase=450500−450×100=45050×100≈11.1%
Common Error: Dividing by the new value (500) instead of the original value (450). Percentage change is always relative to the original value.
Pie charts show proportions of a whole. Key points:
