Test Day: What to Expect
Knowing exactly what will happen on test day eliminates uncertainty and reduces anxiety. Many candidates find the UCAT stressful not because of the questions themselves but because the testing environment is unfamiliar. This lesson walks you through every stage of the test day experience so that nothing comes as a surprise.
Before You Leave Home
The Night Before
- Get a good night's sleep. Research consistently shows that sleep deprivation impairs cognitive performance. Do not stay up late cramming — your UCAT preparation should be done well before test day.
- Prepare everything you need:
- Valid photo ID (passport, driving licence, or national ID card — it must be current and not expired)
- Your booking confirmation (printed or on your phone)
- Know the test centre address and your planned route
- Do NOT bring: revision notes, textbooks, electronic devices (you will be asked to store them). Do not bring a physical calculator — you will use the on-screen one.
Morning of the Test
- Eat a proper breakfast — You will be in the test centre for approximately 2.5–3 hours including check-in and the test itself. You need sustained mental energy.
- Arrive early — Aim to arrive at the test centre at least 30 minutes before your scheduled test time. If you arrive late, you may not be allowed to sit the test, and you will forfeit your fee.
- Use the toilet before check-in — You will not have a scheduled toilet break during the test. While you can technically leave for the toilet during the test, the timer does not stop, so any time away is time lost.
- Stay calm — Some nervousness is normal and can actually improve performance. Deep breathing exercises during the journey can help manage anxiety.
Arriving at the Test Centre
Pearson VUE Test Centres
All UCAT tests are administered at Pearson VUE test centres. These are professional testing facilities used for many different exams (IT certifications, professional qualifications, etc.). The environment is standardised worldwide.
Typical test centre features:
- A reception/check-in area
- Secure lockers for personal belongings
- A testing room with individual workstations separated by partitions
- Quiet, climate-controlled environment
- CCTV monitoring throughout
Check-In Process
- Report to reception — Present your booking confirmation and photo ID.
- Identity verification — The invigilator will check your ID against your booking details. Your name must match exactly.
- Photograph — A digital photograph will be taken at check-in.
- Palm vein scan or digital signature — Some centres use biometric verification.
- Empty your pockets — You must demonstrate that you are not carrying any prohibited items.
- Store your belongings — All personal items (phone, wallet, keys, watch, jewellery, water bottle, food) must be stored in a locker. You are not allowed to access your locker during the test.
- Receive your materials — You will be given:
- A laminated noteboard (or whiteboard) and a marker pen for working out
- You may request additional noteboards during the test if needed
Important: You cannot wear a watch during the test. There is a timer on the computer screen. Some centres may also ask you to turn out your pockets and/or roll up your sleeves.
The Testing Room
Your Workstation
You will be seated at an individual computer workstation with:
- A desktop computer with a monitor
- A mouse and keyboard
- Noise-cancelling headphones or earplugs (provided — use them, as other candidates may be taking different tests)
- Your laminated noteboard and marker
The workstations are separated by partitions to prevent you from seeing other candidates' screens.
Starting the Test
- The invigilator will log you in to the testing system
- You will see an introductory tutorial (approximately 1 minute) explaining how to navigate the test interface
- The tutorial is not timed and does not count towards your test
- When you are ready, you click to start the first subtest (Verbal Reasoning)
- Once you start, the timer begins immediately
