Healthcare professionals constantly juggle competing priorities: multiple patients needing attention simultaneously, academic commitments clashing with clinical placements, personal wellbeing versus professional obligations. The SJT tests whether you can prioritise effectively, delegate appropriately, and recognise when you are overwhelmed.
These scenarios are realistic reflections of daily life in medicine. You might be presented with a situation where two patients need your attention at the same time, or where your revision schedule conflicts with a team commitment, or where personal issues are affecting your ability to function. The correct answer demonstrates mature prioritisation and self-awareness.
The key principle is that patient safety always takes the highest priority, but beyond that, good judgement involves communicating competing demands honestly, asking for help when needed, and not trying to do everything yourself. The SJT penalises candidates who attempt to handle multiple urgent tasks alone rather than delegating or escalating.
Self-care is also a professional responsibility. A healthcare professional who is exhausted, unwell, or emotionally distressed is a risk to patients. The SJT rewards answers where candidates recognise their own limitations and take appropriate steps to manage them, rather than pushing through regardless.
| Situation | Best Response | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Two patients need urgent attention at once | Assess which is most clinically urgent, call for help for the other | Triage and delegation are core clinical skills |
| Personal problems are affecting your clinical performance | Speak to your supervisor or occupational health | Self-awareness protects patients |
| You are asked to stay late but have an important exam tomorrow | Explain the conflict honestly and try to find a compromise | Communication is better than silent resentment or unreliability |
| A colleague asks for help but you are already overloaded | Be honest about your workload and help them find alternative support | Overcommitting risks errors |
| Multiple deadlines converge at the same time | Prioritise by consequence and communicate with all stakeholders | Transparency prevents missed obligations |
