This lesson covers universities where a UCAT cognitive score of approximately 1800–2000 can be competitive. These universities are excellent strategic options for candidates whose UCAT score is below the median or who want to ensure at least one strong safety choice in their UCAS application.
| University | Typical Threshold Range | SJT Requirement | Interview Format |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cardiff University | ~1800–2050 | Band 4 rejected | MMI |
| University of Aberdeen | ~1800–2000 | Band 4 rejected | MMI |
| University of Dundee | ~1800–2000 | Band 4 rejected | MMI |
| Queen's University Belfast | ~1850–2050 | Band 4 rejected | MMI |
| University of Plymouth | ~1800–2000 | Band 4 rejected | MMI |
| University of Exeter | ~1850–2050 | Band 4 rejected | MMI |
Important: "Accessible" does not mean "easy." These universities are highly competitive — they simply place less emphasis on UCAT as the primary filter and give greater weight to other parts of your application.
Cardiff operates a factor-based model where UCAT is one of several elements considered holistically. There is no rigid numerical threshold — instead, UCAT is reviewed alongside academic performance, the personal statement, and contextual data. In practice, competitive applicants typically have scores in the 1800–2050 range.
Cardiff uses MMI format with approximately 8 stations covering ethical scenarios, communication, teamwork, and motivation for medicine.
Strategy: Cardiff is an excellent choice if your UCAT score is below 2000 but you have a strong personal statement and good academics. Welsh applicants have a significant structural advantage. For non-Welsh applicants, a score above 1900 with AAA predictions is a reasonable target.
Aberdeen uses a multi-factor scoring system where UCAT contributes but does not dominate. The university values a breadth of evidence and considers academic performance, personal statement, and non-academic achievements alongside UCAT. Competitive scores typically range from 1800–2000.
Aberdeen uses MMI format with stations covering clinical scenarios, ethical reasoning, communication, and personal motivation.
Strategy: Aberdeen is a strong safety choice, particularly for Scottish applicants. A UCAT score in the high 1800s combined with strong academics and a well-crafted personal statement can be sufficient. Aberdeen is also known for a supportive, community-oriented medical school environment.
Dundee uses UCAT as part of a holistic selection process where academic performance, the personal statement, and UCAT are all considered together. There is no rigid threshold, but competitive applicants typically have scores in the 1800–2000 range.
Dundee uses MMI format with approximately 7–8 stations.
Strategy: Dundee is an excellent choice for candidates from widening participation backgrounds or those with a UCAT score in the 1800–1900 range. The holistic approach means a compelling personal story and genuine commitment to medicine can compensate for a lower UCAT score.
