This lesson covers universities where you typically need a UCAT cognitive score of approximately 2200 or above to be competitive. These are among the most selective medical schools in the UK for UCAT score requirements. A strong score is essential here — other elements of your application may count for less at the initial screening stage.
The following universities have historically set their UCAT thresholds at the higher end of the score distribution. Note that exact cut-offs vary annually.
| University | Typical Threshold Range | SJT Requirement | Interview Format |
|---|---|---|---|
| Newcastle University | ~2200–2340 | Band 4 rejected | MMI |
| University of Manchester | ~2200–2320 | Band 4 rejected | MMI |
| University of St Andrews | ~2200–2350 | Band 4 rejected | Panel (at partner school) |
| University of Sunderland | ~2200–2310 | Band 4 rejected | MMI |
| University of Glasgow | ~2200–2340 | Band 4 rejected | MMI |
| University of Edinburgh | ~2200–2300 | Band 4 rejected | MMI |
Important: These figures are approximate ranges based on recent cycles. Actual thresholds shift each year depending on the applicant pool.
Newcastle operates a threshold model. The university sets a UCAT cut-off score each year, and applicants below this threshold are typically not considered further. In recent cycles, the threshold has been in the region of 2280–2340.
Newcastle is known for having one of the highest UCAT thresholds in the country. The threshold is set after all applications are received and is influenced by the distribution of scores among applicants that year.
Newcastle uses Multiple Mini Interviews (MMI) with approximately 8 stations. Stations typically cover ethical scenarios, communication tasks, data interpretation, and motivation for medicine.
Strategy: Only apply to Newcastle if your UCAT score is comfortably above 2250. If your score is borderline, the risk of rejection before interview is high.
Manchester uses a combined scoring system where UCAT contributes significantly. While there is effectively a threshold below which candidates are very unlikely to be invited, Manchester converts UCAT scores into points that combine with academic scores. In practice, successful applicants typically have cognitive scores in the 2200–2320+ range.
Manchester uses MMI format with multiple stations. Recent stations have included role-play scenarios, ethical discussions, and problem-solving tasks.
Strategy: Manchester is a strong choice for applicants with both a high UCAT score and excellent academics. If only one is strong, the points system may not yield enough total score.
St Andrews is unusual because it only offers a three-year pre-clinical BSc in Medicine. Students must then transfer to a clinical programme (typically at Manchester, Edinburgh, or another partner). Despite this, competition is fierce and UCAT thresholds are high — typically in the 2200–2350 range.
