Scotland has five medical schools that require or accept the UCAT: Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee, and St Andrews. Scottish medical schools have distinct characteristics that set them apart from their English and Welsh counterparts, including different academic entry requirements, different fee structures, and unique application nuances. This lesson covers the strategic considerations for applying to Scottish medical schools.
Scottish students typically enter university with Highers and Advanced Highers rather than A-Levels. Most Scottish medical schools set requirements in both systems:
| University | Typical Higher Requirement | Typical A-Level Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Glasgow | AAAAB at Higher | AAA at A-Level |
| Edinburgh | AAAAB at Higher | A*AA at A-Level |
| Aberdeen | AABB at Higher (with Advanced Highers) | AAA at A-Level |
| Dundee | AAABB at Higher | AAA at A-Level |
| St Andrews | AAAB at Higher | A*AA at A-Level |
Note: Advanced Highers are considered equivalent to A-Levels. Some Scottish universities require a combination of Highers and Advanced Highers.
Most Scottish medical programmes are 5 years for graduate-entry or accelerated routes, but the standard undergraduate programme is 5 or 6 years depending on the university. St Andrews offers a unique 3-year BSc before students transfer to a clinical school.
This creates a significant financial incentive for Scottish students to study in Scotland, which in turn affects the applicant pool and competition dynamics.
UCAT Threshold: ~2200–2340 (high threshold category)
Glasgow is one of the most UCAT-dependent medical schools in the UK. The university sets a high threshold each year, and UCAT is the primary screening tool.
Key Features:
Strategy: Glasgow is a strong choice if your UCAT is above 2200. For Scottish students, the combination of free tuition and an excellent medical school makes Glasgow extremely popular — be aware that competition among Scottish applicants is fierce.
UCAT Threshold: ~2200–2300 (high threshold category)
Edinburgh is Scotland's most prestigious university overall and its medical school is internationally renowned. The selection process is competitive on multiple fronts.
Key Features:
Strategy: Edinburgh requires both a high UCAT score and excellent academics. It is best suited to candidates who are strong across the board. The international competition means that even Scottish applicants face significant pressure.
UCAT Threshold: ~1800–2000 (accessible threshold category)
Aberdeen is one of the more accessible Scottish medical schools in terms of UCAT requirements. The university values a holistic approach and considers UCAT alongside other factors.
Key Features:
Strategy: Aberdeen is an excellent safety choice for Scottish applicants and a viable option for RUK applicants with UCAT scores in the 1800s. The holistic approach means a strong personal statement and genuine motivation for medicine carry real weight.
UCAT Threshold: ~1800–2000 (accessible threshold category)
