Scotland has five medical schools that require or accept the UCAT: Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee, and St Andrews. Scottish medical schools have distinct characteristics that set them apart from their English and Welsh counterparts, including different academic entry requirements, different fee structures, and unique application nuances. This lesson covers the strategic considerations for applying to Scottish medical schools.
Scottish students typically enter university with Highers and Advanced Highers rather than A-Levels. Most Scottish medical schools set requirements in both systems:
| University | Typical Higher Requirement | Typical A-Level Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Glasgow | AAAAB at Higher | AAA at A-Level |
| Edinburgh | AAAAB at Higher | A*AA at A-Level |
| Aberdeen | AABB at Higher (with Advanced Highers) | AAA at A-Level |
| Dundee | AAABB at Higher | AAA at A-Level |
| St Andrews | AAAB at Higher | A*AA at A-Level |
Note: Advanced Highers are considered equivalent to A-Levels. Some Scottish universities require a combination of Highers and Advanced Highers.
