This practice set focuses on questions that ask what can be inferred or implied from the passage — information that is not stated directly but follows logically from what is stated. These require you to read between the lines without overstepping.
A valid inference is a conclusion that must be true (or is most likely true) based on the information given. It requires a short, logical step from stated facts.
| Passage States | Valid Inference | Invalid Inference |
|---|---|---|
| "Sales increased by 40% after the campaign" | The campaign was followed by higher sales | The campaign caused the sales increase (could be coincidence) |
| "The school has 600 students and 30 teachers" | The student-to-teacher ratio is 20:1 | The school is well-staffed (requires judgement) |
| "Dr Patel led the team of 12 researchers" | Dr Patel was part of the research team | Dr Patel was the most qualified person (not stated) |
When multiple options seem plausible, choose the one that requires the smallest logical jump from the text. The UCAT rewards conservative, evidence-based inferences — not creative interpretation.
Read the passage, identify the relevant information, and select the inference that requires the smallest logical step from the text. Avoid options that require assumptions beyond what the passage provides.
