Reading speed is a trainable skill. Most candidates can increase their effective reading speed by 30–50% over 4–6 weeks of targeted practice, without any loss of comprehension. This lesson provides specific drills, progressive targets, and evidence-based techniques for building the reading speed you need for UCAT VR.
Before you can improve, you need a baseline. Here is how to measure it:
| Reading Speed | Time for 300 Words | UCAT Implication |
|---|---|---|
| 150–200 wpm | 90–120 seconds | Too slow — you will run out of time |
| 200–250 wpm | 72–90 seconds | Below target — will struggle with time |
| 250–350 wpm | 51–72 seconds | Adequate — with good scanning, you can manage |
| 350–450 wpm | 40–51 seconds | Good — comfortable pace for UCAT |
| 450+ wpm | Under 40 seconds | Excellent — you have time to spare |
Target for UCAT: You do not need to read at 450+ wpm for the entire passage. You need to scan at 400+ wpm and read carefully at 250+ wpm for the 1–2 sentences relevant to each question.
Purpose: Increase your scanning speed for locating specific information.
| Week | Target |
|---|---|
| Week 1 | Find the keyword within 8 seconds, 70% of the time |
| Week 2 | Find the keyword within 6 seconds, 80% of the time |
| Week 3 | Find the keyword within 5 seconds, 85% of the time |
| Week 4 | Find the keyword within 4 seconds, 90% of the time |
Purpose: Develop the ability to skim by reading only the first sentence of each paragraph.
First sentences typically introduce the paragraph's main idea. By training yourself to extract this information quickly, you build a mental map of the passage in 10 seconds — enough to know where to look for specific questions.
| Week | Target |
|---|---|
| Week 1 | Read first sentences of a 4-paragraph passage in 12 seconds, summarise 3/4 correctly |
| Week 2 | Read first sentences in 10 seconds, summarise 3/4 correctly |
| Week 3 | Read first sentences in 8 seconds, summarise 4/4 correctly |
| Week 4 | Read first sentences in 6 seconds, summarise 4/4 correctly |
Purpose: Push your reading speed beyond your comfort zone to expand your capacity.
