Study the two options for managing a stretch of rapidly eroding lowland coast (written for this exercise).
Option A — Hold the line with hard engineering. Build a rock revetment and two new rock groynes in front of the threatened village to stop erosion and trap a protective beach. Higher upfront cost; protects 40 homes and the coast road; may starve beaches further along the coast of sediment, increasing their erosion.
Option B — Managed realignment. Do not defend the open coast; instead relocate the 40 homes and the road inland over 15 years and allow the cliff to retreat naturally, creating new intertidal habitat. Lower engineering cost but high relocation and compensation cost; loss of land and disruption to residents; no downdrift sediment starvation.
Using the two options and your own knowledge, justify which option would be the more sustainable way to manage this coast. (8 marks) (plus 4 marks for SPaG)
