Imagine you're reading a recipe that says: "Put the cake in the oven. Mix the flour and sugar. Break the eggs into the bowl." Something's wrong, isn't it? The steps are in the wrong order. You can't put a cake in the oven before you've mixed the ingredients!
Sequencing means putting information in a logical order. This might be chronological (time order), by importance, by cause and effect, or by any other logical structure. The FSCE 11+ exam tests your ability to recognise and create logical sequences — in comprehension, reasoning, and writing tasks.

Events are arranged in the order they happened — from first to last.
Signal words: first, then, next, after, before, later, finally, in 1066, last week, the following day
Ideas are arranged from most important to least important (or the other way round).
Signal words: most importantly, primarily, above all, furthermore, additionally, finally
Events are arranged to show how one thing leads to another.
Signal words: because, therefore, as a result, consequently, this led to, due to
Steps are arranged in the order they must be completed — like in a recipe or instructions.
Signal words: step 1, first, begin by, then, next, after that, finally
Things are described by their position in space — left to right, top to bottom, near to far.
Signal words: above, below, to the left, in the distance, nearby, behind
Put these events in chronological order: A) The Great Fire of London destroyed much of the city. B) Samuel Pepys began writing his famous diary. C) The plague killed thousands of Londoners. D) Christopher Wren designed the new St Paul's Cathedral. E) King Charles II was restored to the throne.
Correct order:
How to work it out: Use your knowledge of history and look for clues. The fire "destroyed" the city, so Wren must have designed the NEW cathedral AFTER the fire.
Put these in cause-and-effect order: A) The river flooded nearby homes. B) Heavy rain fell for three days without stopping. C) The river burst its banks. D) Families were evacuated to a local school. E) The ground became completely saturated with water.
Correct order:
Notice: Each event CAUSES the next one. This is a chain of cause and effect.
A school council is writing a letter to the headteacher asking for improvements. Rank these arguments from most to least persuasive:
A) "My friend thinks the playground is boring." B) "Research shows that children who have access to outdoor play equipment are 30% more active during break times." C) "Three Year 6 students have been injured this term because the old equipment is damaged." D) "Other schools in the area have already upgraded their playgrounds." E) "A survey of 200 students showed that 85% want new playground equipment."
