The four GCSE French papers — Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing — each demand specific skills and techniques. This lesson consolidates everything you need to know about exam strategies, from identifying false friends in reading to structuring a 150-word essay. Mastering these skills is the difference between knowing French and getting a high grade in French.
Scanning means searching the text quickly for specific information (a name, a date, a number). Use this when the question asks for a concrete detail.
Skimming means reading the text quickly to get the general idea. Use this before tackling the questions so you understand the overall topic and tone.
Cognates are words that look similar in French and English. Use them to unlock meaning:
| French | English |
|---|---|
| la musique | music |
| le restaurant | restaurant |
| la télévision | television |
| confortable | comfortable |
| populaire | popular |
| important | important |
| nécessaire | necessary |
| la différence | difference |
Many French words follow predictable patterns:
| French ending | English equivalent | Example |
|---|---|---|
| -tion | -tion | éducation → education |
| -ment | -ly | rapidement → rapidly |
| -eux/-euse | -ous | dangereux → dangerous |
| -ique | -ic / -ical | fantastique → fantastic |
| -é | -ed / -y | fatigué → fatigued / tired |
| -aire | -ary | nécessaire → necessary |
| -ence/-ance | -ence/-ance | différence → difference |
False friends are words that look like English words but have completely different meanings. They are deliberately used in exams to test whether you really understand French.
Here is a comprehensive list of false friends you must know:

| la bibliothèque | — | library |

Exam tip: If a word in the reading paper looks identical or very similar to an English word, be cautious — it may be a false friend. Always check the context before committing to your answer. If in doubt, read the whole sentence and see which meaning makes sense.
Sometimes the answer is not stated explicitly — you must infer it.
Exam tip: In the reading exam, always answer every question. Even if you are unsure, an educated guess based on context is better than a blank answer. You cannot lose marks for a wrong answer.
Being able to distinguish tenses in spoken French is crucial:
| Tense | What to listen for | Example (sounds like) |
|---|---|---|
| Present | Regular verb endings (-e, -es, -ent are silent) | je mange (zhuh monzh) |
| Passé composé | ai/a/avons/ont or suis/est/sommes/sont + past participle | j'ai mangé (zhay monzhay) |
| Imperfect | -ais/-ait/-aient endings (all sound the same: "ay") | je mangeais (zhuh monzhay) — context distinguishes from passé composé |
| Future | -rai/-ras/-ra/-rons/-rez/-ront endings | je mangerai (zhuh monzhuh-ray) |
| Conditional | -rais/-rait/-raient endings (sound like "ray") | je mangerais (zhuh monzhuh-ray) |
Key distinction by ear: The passé composé j'ai mangé has two parts (auxiliary + participle). The imperfect je mangeais is one word. Listen for the auxiliary to identify the passé composé.
Numbers are one of the most commonly tested listening skills:
| Number range | Key points |
|---|---|
| 1–20 | Learn perfectly; 1–16 are irregular |
| 21–69 | Regular pattern: vingt et un, trente-deux, etc. |
| 70–79 | soixante-dix (60+10), soixante et onze (60+11), etc. |
| 80–89 | quatre-vingts (4×20), quatre-vingt-un, etc. |
| 90–99 | quatre-vingt-dix (4×20+10), quatre-vingt-onze, etc. |
| 100+ | cent, deux cents, mille |
Times: Il est huit heures et quart (8:15), Il est neuf heures moins le quart (8:45), Il est midi/minuit (noon/midnight).
Dates: Le premier janvier (1st January), Le deux février (2nd February) — ordinal only for the first.
Exam tip: Before each listening passage, read all the questions carefully. Predict what vocabulary you might hear. During the first play, write brief notes. During the second play, check and refine your answers. Always answer every question — you have a 25% chance even with a guess.
The photo card task requires you to describe a photo and answer questions about a related topic. Use the WHAT / WHO / WHERE / WHEN / WHY framework:
| Element | What to say | Useful phrases |
|---|---|---|
| WHAT | Describe what is happening | Sur la photo, je vois… (In the photo, I see…), Il y a… (There is/are…) |
| WHO | Describe the people | Il y a un homme / une femme / des enfants. La personne porte… (The person is wearing…) |
| WHERE | Describe the location | Ils sont dans un parc / une école / un restaurant. |
| WHEN | Suggest the time/season | Il fait beau, donc c'est probablement l'été. (The weather is nice, so it is probably summer.) |
| WHY | Give an opinion | À mon avis, ils passent un bon moment. (In my opinion, they are having a good time.) |
For the conversation part of the speaking exam, follow the DOT approach:
| Letter | Strategy | Example |
|---|---|---|
| D | Develop your answer — don't give one-word replies | J'aime le sport → J'aime le sport, surtout le football, parce que c'est bon pour la santé et j'aime jouer en équipe. |
| O | Give opinions with justification | À mon avis, c'est important de faire du sport car ça aide à rester en forme. |
| T | Use three tenses minimum | Present: Je joue au football. Past: L'année dernière, j'ai joué dans un tournoi. Future: L'année prochaine, je vais m'inscrire à un club. |
Exam tip: The examiner is looking for communication, fluency and spontaneity — not perfection. If you make a mistake, correct yourself and move on. Self-correction actually earns you credit because it shows you know the rule.
For extended writing tasks, use the PALM framework to ensure tense variety and structured content:
| Letter | Meaning | What to include | Tense |
|---|---|---|---|
| P | Past | What you did / what happened | Passé composé + imperfect |
| A | Attitude / Opinion | What you think / feel | Present + opinion phrases |
| L | Lifestyle / Present | What you do now / what it is like | Present tense |
| M | More / Future | What you will / would do | Future + conditional |
| Purpose | Register | Key features |
|---|---|---|
| Informal letter/email | tu form, casual | Salut !, Cher/Chère…, Grosses bises, À bientôt |
| Formal letter | vous form, polite | Monsieur/Madame, Je vous écris pour…, Veuillez agréer… |
| Article/Blog | on/nous, engaging | De nos jours…, Il faut se demander si…, En conclusion… |
| Narrative | Past tenses, descriptive | Passé composé for events, imperfect for setting |
