Future Tense and Conditional — würde + Infinitive

Being able to talk about the future and express hypothetical situations is essential for GCSE German. This lesson covers two ways to express the future, the conditional tense, and how to use if-clauses (Wenn-Sätze).

1. Two Ways to Express the Future

Method 1: Present Tense + Time Expression (Most Common)

In everyday German, the present tense with a future time expression is the most natural way to talk about the future:

Morgen spiele ich Fußball.	Tomorrow I'm playing football.
Nächste Woche fahre ich nach Berlin.	Next week I'm going to Berlin.
Im Sommer arbeite ich in einem Café.	In the summer I'm working in a café.

Method 2: werden + Infinitive (Formal Future)

For more emphasis or formal contexts, use werden + infinitive at the end:

Exam tip: Using werden + infinitive shows the examiner you can use the future tense deliberately. Include at least one sentence with this structure in your writing and speaking responses about future plans.

3. The Conditional: würde + Infinitive

The conditional is used for hypothetical or polite statements — things you would do.

4. Key Conditional Forms: wäre, hätte, könnte

Some verbs have their own conditional forms (Konjunktiv II) rather than using würde:

5. If-Clauses (Wenn-Sätze)

Wenn (if/when) + condition, + result:

Wenn es nicht regnen würde, würden wir draußen spielen.	If it weren't raining, we would play outside.

Exam tip: If-clauses (Wenn-Sätze) with the conditional are excellent for boosting your grade. They show complex grammar and hypothetical thinking. Aim to include at least one in your writing.
