School is one of the most common topics in GCSE German. You need to name school subjects, express opinions about them, describe your school day, and compare the German and British education systems. This lesson covers all the vocabulary, phrases and grammar you need.

When you give a reason using weil (because), the verb goes to the end of the clause:

| Geschichte gefällt mir, weil der Lehrer lustig ist. | I like history because the teacher is funny. |

Exam tip: Always use weil with the verb at the end to justify your opinion. This is one of the most important structures in GCSE German. Practise it until it is automatic.

Die Schule beginnt um acht Uhr. Wir haben sechs Stunden pro Tag. Jede Stunde dauert fünfundvierzig Minuten. Um halb elf haben wir eine Pause, die zwanzig Minuten dauert. Die Mittagspause ist um ein Uhr und dauert eine Stunde. Die Schule endet um halb vier. Nach der Schule gibt es AGs wie Fußball, Chor und Theater.

Exam tip: Use
es gibt(there is/are) + accusative to describe what your school has. This is a simple but effective structure that shows grammatical competence.

Exam tip: Questions about the German school system appear regularly in reading and listening exams. Know the key differences — especially that most German schools do not require uniform and that the grading scale runs from 1 (best) to 6 (worst).
