This lesson covers the RICE treatment protocol as required by the Edexcel GCSE PE specification (1PE0). RICE stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation — it is the standard immediate treatment for soft tissue injuries (sprains, strains, bruises). You must be able to explain what each letter stands for, how it is applied, and why it helps recovery.
RICE is an acronym for the four steps of immediate treatment for acute soft tissue injuries — particularly sprains, strains and bruises. It is designed to reduce pain, swelling and further damage in the first 48–72 hours after injury.

What it means: Stop the activity immediately and avoid using the injured area.
Why it helps:
Application:
| Do | Do Not |
|---|---|
| Stop playing immediately | Continue playing through the pain |
| Support the injured area | Ignore the injury and hope it improves |
| Seek medical advice if severe | Self-diagnose a potentially serious injury |
What it means: Apply ice (or a cold compress) to the injured area.
Why it helps:
Application:

Exam Tip: Always mention that ice should be wrapped in a cloth or towel — never applied directly to the skin. This is a key safety point that examiners look for.
What it means: Apply a firm (but not too tight) bandage or wrap around the injured area.
Why it helps:
Application:
| Sign of Too-Tight Compression | Action |
|---|---|
| Numbness or tingling beyond the bandage | Loosen the bandage immediately |
| Skin turning blue or white | Loosen the bandage immediately |
| Increased pain | Loosen and reposition |
What it means: Raise the injured area above the level of the heart.
Why it helps:
Application:
| Step | Action | Purpose | Key Detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rest | Stop activity; avoid using the injured area | Prevents further damage; allows healing to begin | Remove from play immediately |
| Ice | Apply cold compress for 15–20 min | Reduces swelling (vasoconstriction), pain and tissue damage | Wrap in cloth; never directly on skin |
| Compression | Apply elastic bandage firmly but not too tightly | Reduces swelling and internal bleeding; supports area | Check for numbness/colour change |
| Elevation | Raise injured area above heart level | Reduces swelling via gravity drainage | Use pillows; maintain during rest |
RICE is appropriate for:
RICE is not sufficient for:
Exam Tip: RICE is for immediate management, not long-term treatment. It is the first response in the first 48–72 hours. After that, further treatment (physiotherapy, rehabilitation exercises) may be needed.
