This lesson provides practical strategies for the GCSE Spanish listening and reading papers. These skills apply across all exam boards (AQA, Edexcel, OCR) and can significantly improve your performance.
| Trap | Example |
|---|---|
| Distractor information | The speaker mentions both a positive and negative — the question asks for the OVERALL opinion |
| Negatives | "No me gusta el tenis" — the answer is that they DON'T like tennis |
| Similar sounds | quince (15) vs cincuenta (50), siete (7) vs seis (6) |
| Change of mind | "Quería ir al cine pero al final fuimos al parque" — they went to the park |
| False friends | "sensible" = sensitive (NOT sensible), "éxito" = success (NOT exit) |
Exam tip: You hear the recording TWICE. On the first listening, try to answer. On the second, check and fill in gaps. Don't panic if you miss something first time.
| Spanish | Looks like | Actually means |
|---|---|---|
| actualmente | actually | currently |
| embarazada | embarrassed | pregnant |

|---|---|
| Read questions first | Always use the reading time before listening starts |
| Don't overthink | If you're stuck, write your best guess and move on |
| Check for negatives | Re-read answers looking for "no", "nunca", "nada" |
| Use all the time | Review your answers at the end |
| Foundation → Higher | On a tiered paper, ensure you nail the earlier (easier) questions |

Text (authentic-style Higher tier extract, 120 words):
Question 1 (2 marks): How did Raúl feel about his previous school? Give two details.
Strategy: Scan for "antes" / "detestaba" / past tense verbs. Beware distractor: current school is positive.
