Understanding pronouns is essential for fluent Spanish. This lesson covers subject pronouns, direct object pronouns, indirect object pronouns, reflexive pronouns and their position in sentences.
| Spanish | English |
|---|---|
| yo | I |
| tú | you (informal) |
| él | he |
| ella | she |
| usted (Ud.) | you (formal) |
| nosotros/as | we |
| vosotros/as | you all (informal, Spain) |
| ellos | they (masculine/mixed) |
| ellas | they (feminine) |
| ustedes (Uds.) | you all (formal / Latin America) |
Exam tip: In Spanish, subject pronouns are often omitted because the verb ending tells you who the subject is. "Hablo español" already means "I speak Spanish" — you don't need "yo". Use the pronoun only for emphasis or clarity: "YO hablo español, pero ELLA habla francés."
Direct object pronouns replace the noun that directly receives the action of the verb.
| Spanish | English | Example |
|---|---|---|
| me | me | Me ve. (He sees me.) |
| te | you | Te llamo. (I call you.) |
| lo | him / it (masc.) / you (formal masc.) | Lo compro. (I buy it.) |
| la | her / it (fem.) / you (formal fem.) | La veo. (I see her.) |
| nos | us | Nos invita. (He invites us.) |
| os | you all | Os llamo. (I call you all.) |
| los | them (masc.) / you all (formal masc.) | Los conozco. (I know them.) |
| las | them (fem.) / you all (formal fem.) | Las como. (I eat them.) |
Indirect object pronouns indicate to whom or for whom the action is done.
| Spanish | English | Example |
|---|---|---|
| me | to me | Me da un regalo. (He gives me a present.) |
| te | to you | Te mando un mensaje. (I send you a message.) |
| le | to him/her/you (formal) | Le digo la verdad. (I tell him/her the truth.) |
| nos | to us | Nos enseña español. (She teaches us Spanish.) |
| os | to you all | Os compro helados. (I buy you all ice creams.) |
| les | to them / you all (formal) | Les doy las gracias. (I give them thanks.) |
Gustar-type verbs use indirect object pronouns:
Reflexive pronouns are used with reflexive verbs where the subject performs the action on themselves.
| Spanish | English | Example with levantarse |
|---|---|---|
| me | myself | Me levanto. |
| te | yourself | Te levantas. |
| se | himself/herself/yourself (formal) | Se levanta. |
| nos | ourselves | Nos levantamos. |
| os | yourselves | Os levantáis. |
| se | themselves / yourselves (formal) | Se levantan. |
When both are used together, the indirect comes before the direct:
When both pronouns start with "l", the indirect le/les changes to se:
Exam tip: Pronoun placement is a frequent source of errors. Remember: pronouns go BEFORE a conjugated verb but can ATTACH to infinitives and gerunds. In the exam, getting pronouns right shows excellent grammatical control.
