Festivals and Celebrations

Understanding and describing festivals is essential for the cultural knowledge component of GCSE Spanish. You need to know about major festivals in Spain and Latin America, describe celebrations you have attended and discuss the importance of traditions. This lesson covers the most important festivals, celebrations vocabulary and model answers.

1. Major Spanish Festivals

La Navidad (Christmas)

Christmas in Spain has some key differences from the UK:

• Nochebuena (Christmas Eve, 24th December) is the main celebration, with a large family dinner.
• El día de Navidad (Christmas Day) is also celebrated, but is quieter.
• Los Reyes Magos (The Three Kings, 6th January) is when children traditionally receive their presents, not on 25th December. On the night of 5th January, there are cabalgatas (parades) in towns across Spain.
• Children leave their shoes out for the Three Kings to fill with gifts, and they eat roscón de Reyes (a ring-shaped cake).

La Semana Santa (Holy Week / Easter)

• Celebrated in the week before Easter Sunday.
• Famous for procesiones (processions) with large floats (pasos) carrying religious statues through the streets.
• Sevilla, Málaga and Valladolid are especially famous for their Semana Santa celebrations.
• Participants called nazarenos wear pointed hoods and robes.
• It is a deeply religious and cultural event, attracting millions of visitors.

Las Fallas (Valencia, March)

• Held in Valencia around San José (19th March).
• Giant papier-mâché figures (ninots) are built and displayed, then burned on the final night (la cremà).
• Includes fireworks (fuegos artificiales), music, and a flower offering to the Virgin Mary (la ofrenda).

San Fermín / Los Sanfermines (Pamplona, July)

• Famous for the encierro (the running of the bulls) through the streets of Pamplona.
• Lasts from 6th to 14th July.
• Participants wear white with red scarves and sashes.
• Controversial due to animal welfare concerns.

La Tomatina (Buñol, Valencia, August)

• A massive tomato fight held on the last Wednesday of August.
• Thousands of people throw tomatoes at each other in the streets.
• Purely for fun — no religious or historical significance.

2. Latin American Festivals

El Día de los Muertos (Mexico, 1st–2nd November)

• Celebrates deceased loved ones — NOT a sad occasion.
• Families build altares (altars/ofrendas) with photos, flowers, candles, food and drink.
• Calaveras (skulls) and flores de cempasúchil (marigold flowers) are traditional symbols.
• People visit cemeteries, eat pan de muerto (bread of the dead) and sugar skulls.
• UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2008.

El Carnaval (various countries)

• Celebrated before Lent in many Spanish-speaking countries.
• Famous carnivals in Cádiz (Spain), Barranquilla (Colombia) and Oruro (Bolivia).
• Features costumes, music, dancing and parades.

5. Model Answer — A Festival

El año pasado fui a España durante la Semana Santa y fue una experiencia increíble. Vi las procesiones en Sevilla — había enormes pasos con estatuas religiosas que llevaban por las calles. El ambiente era muy especial y emocionante. Había mucha gente y se podía escuchar música. Lo que más me impresionó fue la pasión de la gente y la belleza de los pasos. Creo que las fiestas son muy importantes en la cultura española porque reúnen a las familias y mantienen vivas las tradiciones.
