Social issues are tested in GCSE Spanish reading and listening exams and may appear in writing and speaking tasks at higher tier. You need to understand and discuss poverty, homelessness, inequality and charity work.

Creo que la pobreza es uno de los problemas más graves del mundo. Me preocupa mucho que haya personas sin hogar en las calles de mi ciudad. No es justo que algunos tengan tanto mientras otros no tienen nada. En mi opinión, el gobierno debería hacer más para ayudar a los más necesitados — por ejemplo, construir más viviendas sociales y crear más oportunidades de empleo. Exam tip: Social issues require a range of opinion phrases and subjunctive structures for higher tier ("es importante que", "no es justo que"). Even at foundation tier, clear opinions with reasons will score well.

Por desgracia, en el Reino Unido — como en muchos países — existen problemas sociales graves que afectan a millones de personas. Para mí, los más urgentes son la pobreza infantil, las personas sin hogar y la desigualdad de género. Me indigna que, en uno de los países más ricos del mundo, haya niños que van al colegio con hambre o que viven en condiciones precarias. Según las estadísticas, una de cada cinco familias británicas sufre algún tipo de inseguridad alimentaria. Esto es inaceptable. El mes pasado mi hermana y yo organizamos una colecta de alimentos en el colegio y conseguimos llenar más de cincuenta cajas para un banco de alimentos local. Fue una experiencia muy gratificante, pero también triste — nos dimos cuenta de la magnitud del problema. Otro problema importante es la violencia de género. Cada semana mueren mujeres a manos de sus parejas, y muchas más sufren acoso o discriminación en el trabajo. Es fundamental que el gobierno invierta más en educación y en programas de prevención. English translation

Unfortunately, in the United Kingdom — as in many countries — there are serious social problems affecting millions of people. For me, the most urgent ones are child poverty, homelessness and gender inequality. It outrages me that in one of the richest countries in the world there are children who go to school hungry or who live in precarious conditions. According to statistics, one in five British families suffers some kind of food insecurity. This is unacceptable. Last month my sister and I organised a food collection at school and managed to fill more than fifty boxes for a local food bank. It was a very rewarding experience, but also sad — we realised the magnitude of the problem. Another important problem is gender-based violence. Every week women die at the hands of their partners, and many more suffer harassment or discrimination at work. It is essential that the government invests more in education and prevention programmes. For my part, I believe each of us has a role to play. If I could, I would devote more time to volunteering; when I am eighteen, I hope to join an NGO. As a society, we must demand that our politicians take concrete steps: more social housing, decent wages and stricter laws against discrimination. Only then will we be able to build a fairer society for all.
