The two most important reading skills for the IELTS Academic Reading test are skimming and scanning. These techniques allow you to process long academic passages quickly and locate specific information without reading every word. Mastering both is essential for Band 7+.
Skimming is the technique of reading a passage quickly to get the general idea — the main topic, the writer's overall argument, and the structure of the text. When you skim, you are not trying to understand every detail. You are building a mental map of the passage.
Imagine a passage about the decline of coral reefs. When skimming, your mental map might look like this:
Paragraph 1: Introduction — coral reefs are declining worldwide
Paragraph 2: Cause 1 — rising ocean temperatures
Paragraph 3: Cause 2 — ocean acidification
Paragraph 4: Cause 3 — human activities (fishing, pollution)
Paragraph 5: Effects on marine biodiversity
Paragraph 6: Conservation efforts
Paragraph 7: Conclusion — urgency of action
This map takes 2–3 minutes to build and saves significant time when you need to locate information for specific questions.
Band 7+ Strategy: Spend the first 2–3 minutes skimming each passage before looking at the questions. This initial investment pays off because you will know exactly where to look for answers.
Scanning is the technique of searching a passage for specific information — a name, a date, a number, a technical term, or a keyword from a question. When you scan, your eyes move rapidly over the text without reading for comprehension. You are looking for a visual match.

Question: "In which year did researchers first observe coral bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef?"
Scanning process:
Understanding when to skim and when to scan is just as important as knowing how to do each one.
