Advantages-disadvantages essays ask you to evaluate the positive and negative aspects of a trend, policy, or phenomenon. The key challenge is not just listing points but developing them analytically and reaching a clear conclusion.
There are two main variations, and they require different approaches:
Some people work from home using modern technology. Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?
This variation requires you to take a position — you must conclude that one side is stronger.
Many young people are now choosing to take a gap year before starting university. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this trend?
This variation requires you to discuss both sides. You may give your opinion, but the primary task is balanced analysis.
Band 7+ tip: Always check the exact wording. If it says "outweigh," you must give a clear opinion on which side is stronger. If it just asks "what are the advantages and disadvantages," balanced discussion is the priority.

The rise of remote working, facilitated by advances in digital technology, has transformed the modern workplace. While there are certain drawbacks to this arrangement, I believe that the benefits — including greater flexibility and improved work-life balance — significantly outweigh the disadvantages.
Taking a gap year between secondary school and university has become increasingly popular among young people. This trend offers several notable advantages, though it also carries potential risks that deserve careful consideration.
Each advantage should be fully developed using the Point-Explain-Example pattern.
The most significant advantage of remote working is the flexibility it affords employees. Without the need to commute, workers can reclaim several hours each day, which can be dedicated to personal health, family time, or professional development. This flexibility is particularly valuable for working parents, who can more easily manage childcare responsibilities alongside their professional duties. Furthermore, remote working eliminates geographical barriers, enabling companies to recruit talented individuals regardless of their location. This has been especially beneficial for professionals in rural areas, who previously had limited access to high-quality employment opportunities.
Apply the same depth of development to disadvantages.
