Section 1 of the General Training Reading test presents short, factual texts that you might encounter in everyday English-speaking life. These include notices, advertisements, timetables, leaflets, and instruction manuals. While the texts themselves are straightforward, the questions are designed to test precision — and many candidates lose marks here through carelessness.
Section 1 typically contains two or three short texts with a combined total of approximately 13–14 questions. The texts are practical and functional.
| Text Type | Examples |
|---|---|
| Notices and signs | Library rules, parking restrictions, building regulations, safety warnings |
| Advertisements | Job ads, product ads, service ads, property listings |
| Timetables and schedules | Bus/train timetables, cinema schedules, class timetables, event programmes |
| Leaflets and brochures | Tourist information, health advice, community events, membership details |
| Instruction manuals | Product setup guides, warranty information, return policies |
| Menus and price lists | Restaurant menus, subscription plans, membership fees |
You are given a list of statements and must match each one to the correct text or section.
Strategy:
Band 7+ Tip: Do not assume the answer is in the most obvious text. If there are three advertisements for different gyms, the question might refer to a detail that only appears in the third one. Read all options.
You must decide whether a statement agrees with the text (True), contradicts it (False), or whether the text simply does not provide enough information to determine either (Not Given).
Strategy:
Common Trap: Confusing FALSE with NOT GIVEN

Text: "The pool is open Monday to Friday, 6am–9pm."
Statement: "The pool is closed on Saturdays."
This is NOT GIVEN — the text does not mention Saturday.
It does NOT say "the pool is open every day" — so we cannot
conclude it is open or closed on Saturday.
If the text said "The pool is open seven days a week" and the
statement said "The pool is closed on Saturdays" — THAT would
be FALSE.
Band 7+ Tip: If you find yourself making an inference or assumption, the answer is probably Not Given. The IELTS test rewards literal reading, not logical deduction.
You must answer questions using words taken directly from the text. The instructions will specify a word limit (e.g. "NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS").
Strategy:
You are given incomplete sentences and must complete them using words from the text.
Strategy:
You fill in gaps in a summary table, set of notes, or flow chart using information from the text.
Strategy:
You have 60 minutes for all three Reading sections (40 questions total). The recommended allocation:
