Basic Word Order

German word order follows strict rules. The most important is the V2 rule: the conjugated verb is ALWAYS the second element in a main clause.

The V2 Rule

Position 1	Position 2 (VERB)	Rest
Ich	lerne	Deutsch.
Der Mann	kauft	ein Buch.
Morgen	gehe	ich ins Kino.
Leider	kann	ich nicht kommen.

If position 1 is NOT the subject, the subject moves after the verb (inversion).
