Negation

German uses nicht (not) and kein (no/not a) for negation. Which one to use depends on what you are negating.

The Core Rule

If the positive uses ein/eine or no article: use kein. Otherwise: use nicht.

Using Nicht

Negating the whole verb: at the end

| Ich verstehe das nicht. | I do not understand that. | | Er kommt morgen nicht. | He is not coming tomorrow. |

Negating adjectives: before them

| Das ist nicht schön. | That is not nice. |

Negating adverbs: before them

| Er fährt nicht schnell. | He does not drive fast. |

Negating prepositional phrases: before them

| Ich gehe nicht ins Kino. | I am not going to the cinema. |

Negating definite nouns: after them

| Ich kenne den Mann nicht. | I do not know the man. |
