Now that you know how to form Futur I (werden + infinitive), it is time to learn when and why to use it. Futur I is not just about the future — it has several important functions, some of which have nothing to do with future time at all.
Futur I is the natural choice when making predictions about what will happen:
For predictions, Futur I sounds much more natural than the present tense because there is an element of uncertainty or projection.
When you want to express a strong commitment or make a promise, Futur I adds weight and emphasis:
The Futur I here signals determination — it is stronger than a simple present-tense statement.
Futur I is very common in threats, warnings, and serious statements:
This is a surprising use of Futur I — it can express what you assume or suppose is happening right now:
The words wohl, schon, wahrscheinlich (probably), and vermutlich (presumably) often accompany this usage. The Futur I signals that you are guessing rather than stating a fact.
Compare:
For simple plans, the present tense is more natural:
Overly formal: Ich werde morgen ins Kino gehen. Natural: Ich gehe morgen ins Kino.
Timetables and schedules always use the present tense:
