The Konjunktiv II (subjunctive II) is one of the most important grammatical structures in German. It is used to express hypothetical situations, wishes, polite requests, and unreal conditions. If the Indikativ (indicative) describes reality, the Konjunktiv II describes what is not real — what could be, what you wish were true, or what would happen if circumstances were different.
