Konjunktiv II: Introduction

The Konjunktiv II (subjunctive II) is one of the most important grammatical structures in German. It is used to express hypothetical situations, wishes, polite requests, and unreal conditions. If the Indikativ (indicative) describes reality, the Konjunktiv II describes what is not real — what could be, what you wish were true, or what would happen if circumstances were different.

What the Konjunktiv II Expresses

1. Hypothetical / Unreal Situations

• Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich ein Haus kaufen.

• If I were rich, I would buy a house.

• Wenn ich fliegen könnte, würde ich nach Japan reisen.

• If I could fly, I would travel to Japan.

2. Wishes

• Ich wünschte, ich hätte mehr Zeit.

• I wish I had more time.

• Wenn ich nur besser Deutsch sprechen könnte!

• If only I could speak German better!

3. Polite Requests

• Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen?

• Could you please help me?

• Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee.

• I would like a coffee.

4. Giving Advice

• An deiner Stelle würde ich zum Arzt gehen.

• In your place, I would go to the doctor.

• Du solltest mehr schlafen.

• You should sleep more.

Formation: Two Main Ways

Method 1: Würde + Infinitive (Most Common)

This is the most widely used form, especially in spoken German. We cover it in detail in the next lesson.

Method 2: Special One-Word Forms (For Common Verbs)

For haben, sein, modal verbs, and a few other common verbs, Germans use special Konjunktiv II forms rather than würde + infinitive:

Wäre and Hätte: The Two Most Important Forms

• Das wäre schön. — That would be nice.
